Functional medicine identifies and treats the root cause of illness rather than simply managing symptoms.
Conventional medicine is often excellent at diagnosing and treating acute conditions, such as a broken bone, an infection, or a heart attack. However, it can be less equipped to address chronic, complex symptoms like fatigue, brain fog, or hormone imbalances, where standard testing may come back “normal” even though something is clearly wrong.
Functional medicine takes a different approach. It looks at the whole person, including gut health, hormones, nutrition, stress, genetics, and environment, to understand why symptoms are happening, not just what they are.
Treatment plans are personalized rather than protocol-based, often combining nutrition, targeted supplementation, and lifestyle changes alongside conventional care rather than replacing it.
No. Functional medicine works alongside conventional care, not instead of it. It can be especially helpful for chronic or unexplained symptoms when standard testing hasn’t provided an answer.

A comprehensive consultation typically includes a detailed review of your health history, family health history, lifestyle, diet, and symptoms, followed by targeted diagnostic testing. From there, a personalized treatment plan is built using nutrition, supplements, and lifestyle changes to address the underlying cause.
Testing is individualized for each person, based on your specific symptoms, health history, and goals.
Depending on what’s needed, testing often goes beyond a standard physical and may include comprehensive thyroid panels, hormone testing, nutrient and micronutrient panels, food sensitivity testing, and gut microbiome analysis. Additional testing for heavy metals, mold toxicity, mitochondrial function, and detoxification issues may also be ordered.
Yes. All consultations with Dr. Goldberg are conducted virtually, over Zoom or by phone, making it easy to receive in-depth, personalized care without an in-office visit. No, Dr. Goldberg does not participate with insurance. If you have out-of-network benefits, you may be able to submit your superbill for reimbursement. When possible, Dr. Goldberg orders testing through in-network labs like Labcorp or Quest.
Usually! You can confirm with your specific plan administrator, but these accounts generally cover consultations, diagnostic testing, and even supplements recommended by Dr. Goldberg.
After your initial consultation, you’ll have a review of findings appointment to go over test results and design a personalized treatment plan. From there, follow-up visits vary per person but are usually scheduled every 4–6 weeks until symptoms stabilize and test markers improve. Once you’re feeling better, maintenance visits are often spaced every few months to help maintain progress.
